Here are some suggested prayers against anxiety, and we sure could use them because this world is full of fear and anxious thoughts.
When anxieties threaten to overwhelm you, one of the very best ways to pray to God is to pray Scripture back to Him. Use His Word as a part of your daily prayer life. When you repeat Bible verses in your prayers, you are not only mediating on God’s Word, but you are also reminding God — and yourself — about His great promises to you through His Word. Using the word of God is a powerful way to calm the anxious mind and bask in the truth of God’s love.
Sometimes, when the mind feels scrambled, it is hard to focus your thoughts on prayer. These examples of short prayers are to help you mentally focus and then deepen your own prayer life as you bring your anxieties to God.
Each of these suggested prayers include a corresponding Bible verse.
When you are experiences times of anxiety, take these short prayers, refer to the Scriptures associated with them, and tell God all about your troubles. He already knows about your anxieties since you cannot keep secrets from Him, but He wants you to communicate with Him. You are welcome in His presence. He wants to give you peace, but you have to accept this gift from Him.
When you are going through troubled times, a good practice is to write one or more Bible verses on a card, or type them on an app on your phone, and when a panic attack threatens you, pull out the verse, and read it slowly, out loud, if possible. Read and re-read. Yes, repeat the verse.
Think about what God is saying in that verse and allow the Holy Spirit to use God’s Word to calm your troubled heart. Then, use your verse as a start for your prayer to God. Claim the promises about God’s love to you and your unique situation. Keeping God’s Word in the forefront of your mind is the basis of Christian meditations. This simple exercise is a powerful tool to help you through difficult times in your life.
Repeat this process whenever necessary. A practice like this is your faith lifeline to God through His Word. Keeping yourself immersed in God’s Word, even in the midst of difficult times, builds your spiritual faith “muscles.” In times of anxiety when you don’t know what do to, when the future seems very dark, this is a time when you need faith. Faith is not feeling! You cannot trust your feelings as you may not sense God’s presence.
Faith is taking God at His Word. When you do so, and believe what He has said in the Bible, that is faith, despite your feelings. Reading and hearing God Word’s will build your faith in Him. According to Romans 10:17, “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” (KJV)
Here are some suggested prayers against anxiety. Meditate on the promises of God, make the prayers personal to your own particular needs and situations. During times of anxiety, make use of your own personal prayer closet.
Prayers Against Anxiety — Philippians 4:6-7
“Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” (KJV)
Dear Heavenly Father, I do admit that I am troubled about many things, yet You told me in Your Word that I shouldn’t be anxious about anything. Instead, please, instruct me. Thank You that You have invited me to come and tell You all of my concerns. Thank You for Your peace of mind that You have promised to give me. Peace that is beyond my understanding. Thank You for Your protection of Your peace, all of which is anchored in Your Son, Christ Jesus. I need Your peace now. Amen.
Then go ahead and tell God all that is troubling you.
Prayers Against Anxiety — 1 Peter 5:7
“Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.” (KJV)
Dear Father in heaven, Thank You for telling me — commanding me — to give You all of my cares. I certainly don’t want them, and I will be glad to get rid of them. I am amazed that You, the God of the entire universe, cares about me. I am so small, and among all of the billions of people in the world, so insignificant.
Yet You care about the things that trouble me. I can’t understand Your unending love, but I am thankful and very grateful. So dear Father, in the name of Christ Jesus, help me to give, to throw hard at You, all of the things that trouble me. Help me to remember that I gave them to You so that I would not try to get them back. Today, these are the things which are bothering me…
Continue to tell God exactly what is troubling you.
Prayers Against Anxiety — Psalm 46:1
“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” (KJV)
Dear Heavenly Father, there is none that I can trust other than You. I choose You to be my own personal hiding place, my place of safety and my strength. Thank You for being strong when I am weak. Thank You that when I am in trouble You are with me. I don’t know how You will choose to help me in this present situation, but while I wait for Your help in my distress, please, calm my distressed mind, and give me Your peace in my heart.
Remind me that You are in me, and I am in You. Help me, despite my own personal problems, to reflect Your peace. Use me, even in my trials, to help others as You give me Your comfort. Thank You for Your help, which is greater than anything I can ask or think. I pray for this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
Prayers Against Anxiety — 2 Timothy 1:7
“For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” (KJV)
Dear Heavenly Father, I confess to You that right now I have the spirit of fear, but I know that this horrible emotion is not from You. Thank You that You are reminding me that You have given me a healthy mind. If my mind is troubled, it is not because of You. Now, please, fill my mind with the promises of Your love, of Your power.
Please, calm all of the fears of my anxious heart, even as I seek You and hold fast to the sound mind that You gave to me. Please, take away all of my anxiety disorders. Let me not live in fear and extreme depression as this is not Your will for me. Help me to focus on You, on Your love, on Your power, even Your power over my anxious heart.
Continue to pray and tell God all that is troubling you.
Prayers Against Anxiety — Isaiah 26:3
“Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.” (KJV)
Dear Heavenly Father, I need this inner peace that You have promised to give me as this is Your perfect peace. But with all of Your promises, I, too, have a responsibility. To get this peace, I need to have my mind focused and anchored on You. I know that I trust in You but help me to trust You in an even deeper way. I know the way to deepen my trust in You is by reading Your Word. As I read the Bible, please, speak to me through the words I read there.
Thank You for giving me the Bible, Your very instruction Book, written for me to read and to learn about You personally. There are so many things I don’t understand, but I ask that You help me to hear Your through Your Word.
Your Word, Your holy words, are the only thing I can trust. I cannot trust in any other person or thing to help me like You do. I know that I cannot trust my feelings as they are so fickle. I cannot trust in the thoughts of my sinful, wicked heart. I can only put my confidence in the promises You gave me in Your Word.
As I read the Bible, help me to understand You better, especially when I am afraid. I know I will not fully understand You in this life, but as You speak to me through Your Word, I know that I will have a better understanding of You, and, therefore, I will be able to trust in You. Thank You for Your peace.
Prayers Against Anxiety — Romans 8:28
“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.” (KJV)
Dear heavenly Father, I don’t understand why You have allowed me to endure such trials and griefs. When my heart is breaking, when all I want to do is to cry, help me to trust that You truly are working things out for my personal good. Forgive me for the times — the many times — when I have become angry with You. I know in my heart that You are a God of love, a personal God, Who wants and provides the very best for me. Nevertheless, sometimes, so many times, I am fearful and afraid.
Please, forgive me of my fears because then I am not trusting in You. Help me in times of deep distress to remember Your words from this verse. I don’t understand why You are allowing me to experience the pain that I am feeling now.
Help me to trust You for the future, even for eternity, where I will be able to see better, and to look back and realize that You were working all of my trials together for my own good.
I don’t understand now, but when I don’t understand that is where I need to have faith, more faith in You. Thank You for this great promise. I humbly accept the truth of this verse now in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
Prayers Against Anxiety — Philippians 4:19
“But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” (KJV)
Dear Lord, I have so many needs — emotional, spiritual, and physical — but You are the Source of all of my blessings. I know that I am the recipient of these blessings through Your Son, Jesus Christ. Without Him, I could not come to You, I could not have a relationship with You, and I would have no hope in this world or in the one to come.
Thank You so much for the unspeakable gift of Your Son. Help me in anxious times to remember how You have helped me in the past. While my circumstances change, You don’t change. Despite the fact that I may have fears on a daily basis, I know, and help me to focus on, the fact that I also have daily blessings through You because of Christ Jesus.
Please, elevate my fearful heart to embrace all that You have given to me, and that You will continue to provide for me and meet all of my needs. I thank You and praise You for this great promise. I pray this in the name of Your Son, Christ Jesus. Amen.
Prayers Against Anxiety — John 16:33
“These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.” (KJV)
Dear God, Thank You for these wonderful words spoken by Your Son, Jesus Christ. He knew that in this present world there would be, and are so many moments, of anxiety. Your Son lived in this troubled world, and He suffered here. Thank You that Your Son was obedient to Your will to know sorrow and grief, and through His sufferings I can have hope and good cheer because of Him and what He did for me.
Yet, the good news, the wonderful news, is that He has conquered this evil sinful world. Thank You for these victorious words, for this true and glorious statement. I praise Your name for Your plan and Your Son’s obedience. Help me to remember this verse when I am facing my own troubled times. Thank You that I am on the winning side. Please, strengthen me through the battles of anxious times and troubled thoughts. Because of Your Son’s victory, help me to have victory in my own heart and life during my times of trial. I ask this in Christ’s name. Amen.
Prayers Against Anxiety – Psalm 42:11
“Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God.” (KJV)
Dear Heavenly Father, I am so glad that I am not the only one of Your children who sometimes suffers from depression. These words, written by King David, a man after Your own heart, shows that he, too, was depressed. Yet his trust in You is something I need to imitate and apply to my life, and to my own troubling situation. Just as he knew that despite his depression You would eventually put a smile on his face, help me to also trust that You are working in my life for my good. I don’t see what You are doing right now, I just know that I am weary with my trials.
But, please, remind me that through my grief, and despite my troubles You are with me and are working. Thank You for the promise that You will help me to smile again, be joyful, and even praise You for what You are doing now in my life, even though I don’t understand or feel Your presence. I am determined to take Your promises by faith, and I thank You for Your deliverance in advance. In Christ’s name, I pray. Amen.
Prayers Against Anxiety — Psalm 27:1
“(A Psalm of David.) The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?” (KJV)
Dear heavenly Father, I have entrusted my eternal soul to Your safekeeping. Since my soul, the real me, is safe with You, remind me that I can trust You will all of the problems in my life. I get so easily frustrated with the constant problems that I face daily. If You are large enough to protect me, and I trust that You will take care of me throughout eternity, then there is nothing too hard for You in this life.
So, now, in my present struggles, as I come to You through this simple prayer, help me to trust You to help me, even while I put my problems into perspective in the light of eternity. Help me to trust You with my problems, and to continually come to You for help. On Earth I have none other but You. I know that You use others to help me, and I thank You for that, but still, You, and only You, are the source of all of my blessings. I thank You for Your help in my present distress, and I praise You for this in Christ’s name. Amen.
May these prayers against anxiety and the corresponding Bible verses encourage you to turn to God through His Son, Jesus Christ, for Him to keep you in His loving care throughout whatever sadness, fear, or anxiety you may be experiencing right now.
“Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost.” Romans 15:13 (KJV)
