The number 13 meaning in the Bible is usually associated with rebellion. The study of Biblical numerology is fascinating, knowing that God, in His wisdom, decreed all of the words of the Bible, and the number thirteen is no exception.
This symbolic meaning of this particular number, even outside of the Bible, is associated with bad luck and has negative connotations, such as rebellion. Also, the number thirteen is associated with a bad omen, and this dark implication is reflected throughout the Bible. Yet, God’s grace shines brightly through the darkness, and the number thirteen is no exception.
Number 13 Meaning In The Bible — Significant Old Testament Occurrences
The first direct reference in the Bible of the number thirteen in occurs in the Old Testament Book of Genesis.
“Twelve years they served Chedorlaomer, and in the thirteenth year they rebelled.” Genesis 14:4 (KJV)
This is the first actual mention in Biblical text of the number thirteen. From this verse, Bible scholars associate the number thirteen with rebellion. The “they” who rebelled in the thirteenth year were ancient kings who lived and ruled during the time of the patriarch Abraham.
Number 13 Meaning In The Bible — Abraham, Ishmael and Isaac
The number thirteen occurs in the story of Abraham. God told Abraham that he would be a father of many nations. Yet Abraham, at the age of 87, and his wife, Sarah, being 77 years old, were childless. As far as Abraham was concerned, time was running out, or ran out, so Abraham and Sarah decided to help God out.
So, Abraham took his servant girl, Hagar, as a second wife for the purpose of her being a surrogate mother, and, surprise, Hagar gave Abraham and Sarah a son he named Ishmael. So, despite their elderly age, things did work out for Abraham and Sarah after all. No, not exactly, and the consequences of their actions still trouble us to this day.
“And Abram was fourscore and six years old, when Hagar bare Ishmael to Abram.” Genesis 16:16 (KJV)
Sarah’s idea of using Hagar to have a child with Abraham was rebellion against God’s plan. Yet, despite their unbelief that God would use them to have a child together, exactly thirteen years later God showed His grace to Abraham when He made a covenant between both Abraham and all of his descendants. The token of this special and everlasting covenant (Genesis 17:7) was the surgery of circumcision. This was how God explained it to Abraham.
“This is my covenant, which ye shall keep, between me and you and thy seed after thee; Every man child among you shall be circumcised. And ye shall circumcise the flesh of your foreskin; and it shall be a token of the covenant betwixt me and you. And he that is eight days old shall be circumcised among you, every man child in your generations, he that is born in the house, or bought with money of any stranger, which is not of thy seed.” Genesis 17:10-12 (KJV)
Ishmael, the son of Abraham’s lack of faith, was thirteen years old when both he and his father received God’s grace through the token of this special covenant.
“And Abraham was ninety years old and nine, when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin. And Ishmael his son was thirteen years old, when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin.” Genesis 17:24-25 (KJV)
Number 13 Meaning In The Bible — The Book Of Esther
The number thirteen, and the dual nature of its meaning, is prominently seen in the Book of Esther, and more so than in any other book of the Bible. The phrase “thirteenth day” appears seven times in the Bible and six of them are in this book. Coincidence or not, there are thirteen letters in the phrase “thirteenth day.”
Here are the six verses in the Book of Esther which refers to the “thirteenth day.”
“Then were the king’s scribes called on the thirteenth day of the first month, and there was written according to all that Haman had commanded unto the king’s lieutenants, and to the governors that were over every province, and to the rulers of every people of every province according to the writing thereof, and to every people after their language; in the name of king Ahasuerus was it written, and sealed with the king’s ring.” Esther 3:12 (KJV)
“And the letters were sent by posts into all the king’s provinces, to destroy, to kill, and to cause to perish, all Jews, both young and old, little children and women, in one day, even upon the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, which is the month Adar, and to take the spoil of them for a prey.” Esther 3:13 (KJV)
“Upon one day in all the provinces of king Ahasuerus, namely, upon the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, which is the month Adar.” Esther 8:12 (KJV)
“Now in the twelfth month, that is, the month Adar, on the thirteenth day of the same, when the king’s commandment and his decree drew near to be put in execution, in the day that the enemies of the Jews hoped to have power over them, (though it was turned to the contrary, that the Jews had rule over them that hated them;) Esther 9:1 (KJV)
“On the thirteenth day of the month Adar; and on the fourteenth day of the same rested they, and made it a day of feasting and gladness.” Esther 9:17 (KJV)
“But the Jews that were at Shushan assembled together on the thirteenth day thereof, and on the fourteenth thereof; and on the fifteenth day of the same they rested, and made it a day of feasting and gladness.” Esther 9:18 (KJV)
The summary of these verses and the events surrounding the ominous “thirteenth day” is because one of the royal advisor, by the name of Haman, hated a particular Jewish man. Haman hatched a plot to destroy, not only Mordecai, but all of the Jewish people. He convinced the king that his plan would be an excellent idea for the entire kingdom. Using a lottery system, Haman picked the day of mass destruction of the Jews to be on day thirteen of the Hebrew month Adar.
However, God used the Jewish Queen Esther to protect His people. Before this mass murder could be accomplished, Esther pleaded with the king for the life of her people, and through bad circumstances for Haman, ended up being hanged by the king. But at that time and in that culture, a law signed into effect by the king could not be revoked. So the king added to the original law that on the thirteenth day of the month Adar, instead of a massacre of the Jews, the Jews could defend themselves against anyone who tried to kill them. Arming the Jews against their enemies quickly neutralized the original order of mass destruction.
This intervention by God, made the ominous “thirteenth day of the month” one of rejoicing instead of mourning, and feasting and gladness instead of fasting and sadness.
Number 13 Meaning In The Bible — Noah’s Curse on Canaan
Knowing that rebellion is associated with the number thirteen, it is interesting to observe that when God told Noah He was going to destroy the rebellious world with a worldwide flood, this statement is found in Genesis chapter 6, verse 13. “And God said unto Noah, The end of all flesh is come before me; for the earth is filled with violence through them; and, behold, I will destroy them with the earth.” (KJV)
When Noah cursed his grandson Canaan (Ham’s son) for his indiscretion, the actual curse consisted of exactly thirteen words in the English language. “Cursed be Canaan; a servant of servants shall he be unto his brethren.” Genesis 9:25 (KJV)
The curse on Ham’s genealogical line may be both reflected and magnified exactly thirteen generations from Ham with his descendant Nimrod.
“And Cush begat Nimrod: he began to be a mighty one in the earth. He was a mighty hunter before the LORD: wherefore it is said, Even as Nimrod the mighty hunter before the LORD.” Genesis 10:8-9 (KJV)
Nimrod’s life is credited with rebellion and lawlessness, and for also building the tower of Babel.
Number 13 Meaning In The Bible — Rebellion Against the Promised Land
God promised the land of Canaan to the people of Israel. But when Moses sent twelve spies, one man from each of the tribes of Israel, to check out the Promised Land, the men came back with both a sampling of the fruit of the land, but also with a disheartening report of giants.
This is recorded in the Book of Numbers chapter 13 and verses 32 and 33. “And they brought up an evil report of the land which they had searched unto the children of Israel, saying, The land, through which we have gone to search it, is a land that eateth up the inhabitants thereof; and all the people that we saw in it are men of a great stature. And there we saw the giants, the sons of Anak, which come of the giants: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight.” (KJV)
God knew all about the giants who lived in the good land that He had promised His people. The problem was the majority of the spies concentrated on the problems in the land, i.e., the giant descendants of Anak, instead of the God Who would help them destroy them. Hence, rebellion against God.
Number 13 Meaning In The Bible — The Destruction of Jericho
The destruction of Jericho is marked with the number thirteen. God told Joshua the children of Israel were to march around the city one time for six days. But on the seventh day, they were to march around the city seven times.
“And ye shall compass the city, all ye men of war, and go round about the city once. Thus shalt thou do six days. And seven priests shall bear before the ark seven trumpets of rams’ horns: and the seventh day ye shall compass the city seven times, and the priests shall blow with the trumpets.” Joshua 6:3-4 (KJV)
The children of Israel marched around Jericho a total of thirteen times. When the city walls fell, this was a tragedy for those who lived in Jericho, but a triumph for the Israelites.
Number 13 Meaning In The Bible — King Solomon’s House
King Solomon was chosen by God to build the Temple — a house where God would dwell with His people. Solomon built God’s house in seven years, and then he turned his energy into building his own house. Here is how the Bible describes his own building project.
“But Solomon was building his own house thirteen years, and he finished all his house.” 1 Kings 7:1 (KJV)
Solomon began his reign well, but eventually, he rebelled against God. The word “but” at the beginning of this verse seems to foreshadow his future rebellion.
Part of King Solomon’s rebellion against God relates to the Valley of Hinnom. The word “Hinnom” occurs exactly thirteen times in the Bible. This awful place was the location of where the pagan god Moloch was offered child sacrifices in its worship, according to 1 Kings 11:7. What made this even more awful was that the worship of this false god was by the provision by King Solomon in an effort to please his pagan, foreign wives.
Number 13 Meaning In The Bible — Jeremiah’s Ministry
The prophet Jeremiah began his faithful ministry to the rebellious people of Israel in the thirteenth year of godly King Josiah.
“From the thirteenth year of Josiah the son of Amon king of Judah, even unto this day, that is the three and twentieth year, the word of the LORD hath come unto me, and I have spoken unto you, rising early and speaking; but ye have not hearkened.” Jeremiah 25:3 (KJV)
Despite the good influence of King Josiah, the exact timing of Jeremiah’s ministry, which the Holy Spirit made sure was recorded in holy writ, seems to foreshadow the fact that God’s message through Jeremiah would be overwhelmingly rejected.
Number 13 Meaning In The Bible — New Testament Occurrences
The word for the number thirteen does not occur at all in the New Testament, yet there are hints of the meaning of that word. In the Gospel of Mark, Jesus gave a list of sins which arise from the heart and defile a person. There are exactly thirteen. Here is the list from Mark 7:20-23. “And he said, That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man. For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness: All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.” (KJV)
Number 13 Meaning In The Bible — The Last Supper
At the beginning of what is commonly known as “The Last Supper,” there were a total of thirteen individuals. This group included Jesus Christ and His twelve disciples. After Judas Iscariot left the company with the intent on betraying Jesus, there were only twelve people.
Number 13 Meaning In The Bible — The Apostle Paul
Technically, Paul was the thirteenth apostle. After Judas betrayed Jesus and hanged himself, there were only eleven apostles. Later, the risen Christ Himself chose Paul to fill the office of Judas. Paul recoded this in 1 Corinthians 15:9, when he said, “For I am the least of the apostles, that am not meet to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God.” (KJV)
The Biblical interpretation of the number thirteen as it applies to the Apostle Paul is very interesting and appropriate. Before his conversion to Jesus Christ, he rebelled against Him by persecuting God’s people. After meeting the risen Christ, there was a significant change for the better in this former Christian persecutor.
Number 13 Meaning In The Bible — Mark of the Beast
Perhaps the most ominous verse related to the number thirteen is found in the Book of Revelation. In Revelation chapter 13, verse 18, is a reference to another famous number, which is 666. This is how the verse reads. “Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.” (KJV)
In this verse, the number thirteen can be considered as a symbol of Satan. Also in Revelation, the Holy Spirit made sure to point out that the number of man is associated with the number six. The beast referred to here as the antichrist, a man who will be indwelt by Satan.
Understanding a bit about the spiritual significance of the number 13 is to see God working out His divine plan, weaving it among human effort. Despite the negative association with this particular number, it is not an unlucky number, and there should be no fear of the number knowing both God’s promises and His power.
