Genesis 14-22 Questions and Answers
Bible Study Questions on Genesis 14-22
Sodom and Gomorrah and A Name Change
In Genesis 14:3 is the Salt Sea the Dead Sea? Some Bible scholars think this is the Dead Sea.
In Genesis 14:16 is this the same Lot that his wife turned to salt? Yes, it is.
Did Abram ever have a child? Abraham had both Ishmael and Isaac.
What does “wild man” mean back then? This has the connotation of being fierce or savage, not easily tamed, very antisocial.
What prophecy has not yet to come pass in Genesis 17:7? This prophecy did come to pass since Abraham and Sarah did have a child.
Why did God change Abram and Sarai name’s? There is more than one right answer. One reason is that the name “Abraham” means “father of a great multitude” and Sarah means “princess”. In the Hebrew, God added an Hebrew letter into each of their name which signifies His breath. He literally breathed His breath of life into them, especially Sarah, so that they, again Sarah especially, could reproduce.
How many righteous people did God find in Sodom and Gomorrah? Only Lot, his wife and two of their daughters. This was less than five individuals.
Nothing happens to Lot’s daughters after they sleep with their father. There is nothing recorded. But each of their sons grew up to be the father of great nations who were always enemies with the children of Israel.
Was Abraham’s wife Sarah also his sister? She was technically his half sister.
Why did Abraham say that Sarah was his sister in Genesis 20? Sarah was a beautiful woman and Abraham was afraid that if the men of that place knew she was married, they would kill Abraham to try to marry her. This was a lack of faith on Abraham’s part. He was willing for those guys to take Sarah rather then take the change of him getting killed.
Why did Sarah tell Abraham to send the bondwoman away? Now Sarah had her own biological child. She did not need nor did she want to be reminded that Hagar had a child with Abraham. Hagar and her son Ishmael were a constant reminder of her husband’s “affair”. Also this is a picture of the Law of Moses being taken away after the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ ushering in the age of grace. We no longer want the reminded of the Law.
Where is Jehovahjireh in Genesis 22:14? I think that this was the same place where centuries later Solomon built the Temple, and I believe that it is Mount Calvary where Jesus was crucified.
What prophecy has not yet come to pass in Genesis 22:18? This is a reference to Jesus Christ. Through His sacrifice all nations have been blessed but this is only partially fulfilled and will be completely fulfilled in the Millennial reign.
Abraham would have had to kill his only child in Genesis 22. Abraham knew that if he killed Isaac because God asked him to do so, then God would raise Isaac from the dead. Hebrews 11:17-19 “By faith Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac: and he that had received the promises offered up his only begotten son, Of whom it was said, That in Isaac shall thy seed be called: Accounting that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead; from whence also he received him in a figure.”
