The Story Behind The Faith Series Devotionals

Are you an adult who never really learned Bible stories in Sunday school?

Or do you know the Bible stories, and feel they are “just for children?” After all, Sunday school teachers need to teach their students SOMETHING!

Have you ever wondered why there are Bible stories?

Did you ever consider that the stories in the Bible have powerful, spiritual applications for adults?

If any of the above questions got your attention, I want to thank you for stopping by to learn more about my books.

The Faith Series Devotionals, 30-day Bible Study Devotionals

When I first started writing, I envisioned writing to a woman. I am a female and felt that I could relate primarily to ladies. So I added the tag line “For Women” on my books. Now I have brave MEN reading my books, and loving them, and wondering why I say, “For Women.”

My devotionals occasionally include female pronouns, but other than the cover (all with a silhouette of a woman) and the feminine script for the chapter title font, there is nothing else that is strictly feminine about my books. If you like what I write, you can do three things:

1. Thank God for His help and His wisdom in helping me relate His Word.

2. Thank my team of editors. Many authors have one editor, but this girl needs a whole team! I currently have a total of four different editors — one woman and three men. Each one of them brings a unique slant to the editing process, and I am so thankful for all of them and their “red ink.”

3. Suggest them to others. I am in independent author, that means I get to do my own marketing. I don’t have a huge publishing house like Tyndale behind me promoting my work. Word of mouth by people like YOU helps me get discovered. So I thank you in advance.

How The Books Got Started

I always wanted to write a book, but I didn’t know what to write about. I knew that I liked writing non-fiction with the desire to make it as interesting as fiction.

I was teaching Sunday school at my church and my friend, Verna, who was in her 60s at the time, was my assistant. She volunteered to help in my class because she said, “I got saved late in life and I never learned the Bible stories.” Not only was she great at helping me with the kids, but she was also a great student.

At that time, I was teaching children between the ages of 10 to 12. These children could read well independently, so I challenged them to read a portion of their Bible every day.

When I was a young teen, my Sunday school teacher encouraged his class to do this, and his encouragement started me with my personal, daily discipline of having a time of Bible reading and prayer.

Unfortunately, my Sunday school students, when I told them to read the Bible daily, all stared at me blankly, looking at me like I had two heads! What a strange idea this was to them.

Every week I would reiterate this fact, but I was not getting through. I didn’t ask if they did what I had asked them to do because I knew from their blank stares that they had not.

Then, one Sunday, of my students came to me with a list of Bible chapters she had read that week, one chapter a day, and a list of questions that she had while she was reading. It was Verna. Her actions thrilled me!

When I started teaching about the life of King David to my Sunday school class. I wanted to make what the Bible recorded of his life come alive, to be both fascinating and interesting. Plus, I wanted to make practical applications to his experiences that would help my students in their own lives.

When I was finished with the life of David, I moved on to my favorite book of the Bible — Esther. Again, I wanted to teach exactly what the Bible said while making it practical.

Soon, I realized what I was teaching my Sunday school students would make a great month-long devotional book: daily Bible reading, daily teaching on a Scripture passage, and a practical application to everyday living. I also added a suggested prayer to encourage the reader in their own personal prayer life.

My first book was “David’s Faith” followed by “Esther’s Faith.” Then the rest of the books happened!

An overview of the Faith Series Devotionals

Naaman's Faith

Naaman’s Faith

Naaman’s Faith is an eight-day devotional, which serves as an introduction to the “Faith Series” devotionals. Each of my devotionals can be read as a standalone book, but I initially wrote this shorter devotional to give away as a sample of my writing.

In this book, I utilized biblical fiction from the perspective of the orphaned Israelite maid. Her parents may have been killed, as she was taken captive by the Syrians, yet it was her who pointed Naaman to the God of Israel, who gave Naaman both physical and spiritual healing.

David’s Faith

This was my very first book. When I published this, my life long dream of being an author was finally realized. The format of this book is similar to all of the rest of the series.

The life of David is a fascinating one. From young shepherd boy to the second and most famous king of Israel, the Bible records his life and loves, his successes and failures. His experiences have much to teach us today.

I realized the many people didn’t know that the boy who killed Goliath was the man who wrote many of the emotional psalms of the Bible. In each chapter (day) I include reflections on one the the psalms written by David.

Esther’s Faith

My second devotional. This was the first time I utilized fiction. It was an experiment on my part because I wanted my readers to more fully appreciate the characters the Bible introduces. And my readers loved it!

The book of Esther is a favorite of mine. In this multilayered, mysterious book, neither the name of God or prayer is mentioned. But the presence of God permeates this little book as He used an orphaned girl turned queen to save the nation of Israel.

The lessons learned by peeling back the layers of the Biblical narrative about the royal intrigue of palace life, and seeing priceless truths and lessons from God’s Word for our contemporary Christian lives, made this my reader’s favorite book.

Joseph’s Faith

The prophet and governor of Egypt, Joseph, was the eleventh son of the Israelite patriarch Jacob, and the first son of his favorite wife, Rachel. He was also his father’s favorite out of his twelve sons.

As a young man Joseph was a dreamer of prophecies and a sheepherder. Then he was missing, presumed dead by his father due to his brothers’ actions. Yet, he still lives.

The Biblical account of Joseph reads like fiction, yet all of it is true, and recorded in holy writ with a very satisfying outcome.

But the story of Joseph is more than entertainment. In many ways, this Old Testament hero unknowingly represents and foreshadows the very life of Jesus Christ. Learn about the life of Joseph and discover at least thirty similarities to the coming Messiah in this devotional.

Abraham's Faith

Abraham’s Faith

Learn about the biblical account of the man who is revered by the three major monotheistic religions — the man Abraham. One of God’s many promises to him was that He would make his name great. And God did and more for Abraham.  In this devotional, you will explore the life, adventures, wanderings, triumphs, and failures, all which are recorded in the Book of Genesis.

In this devotional, I took literary license and gave a voice to Abraham’s faithful and loving wife, Sarah.

Sarah did not have any biological daughters, and she waited most of her life to have her promised son. But according to the Apostle Peter, he recognized all the women throughout the centuries who have shared the faith of Sarah when he said in 1 Peter 3:6, in referring to Sarah, “whose daughters ye are…”

Jonah’s Faith

In this book, I took literary license in the Biblical fiction part, and, among other things, I expressed the thoughts of the whale, who was more obedient to his Maker than his cargo. I’m sure he was not comfortable being used as a taxi service!

But aside from the willing sea monster, in each verse of Jonah (you will read through the entire book as you read the devotional), there are pertinent lessons to learn, both about God and your service to Him. Deepen your faith in God and enhance your service to Him through learning from the life and experiences of Jonah. There is so much more in this minor prophet book than a just a fantastic fish story!

This was such a fun book to write and may be my own personal favorite, as it was a challenge to dig deep into God’s Word and uncover the many wonderful lessons found in the Book of Jonah.

About the Dedications

I have always loved books. When I was in high school, I took a course on writing children’s books. One of the questions asked was “Why do you want to write?” My answer was something like, “I want to write to be able to dedicate my books to the people I love.”

Personally I always read the dedication page of books and wondered about the person(s) to whom the author dedicated their book. I tis such a privilege to be able to both to write and to dedicate my books to meaningful people in my lives, both those who are present and those who have already finished their earthly course.
