Here are some Bible verses for traveling abroad. Travel, even in our familiar areas can be uncertain and sometimes scary. It is good to start each day with a brief prayer asking for God’s protection to grant us safe travel in our normal daily activities. But when we, or our loved ones, get out of our comfort zone to travel abroad to a foreign country and find ourselves in unfamiliar places, travel anxiety can increase very quickly.
Comforting Bible Verses for Traveling Abroad
Even those who do missionary work and preach the kingdom of God in a foreign country, they too deal with travel anxiety.
No matter where in the world you may be currently, or planning to go, travel is a part of life. Here are some Bible verses on travel to comfort and encourage you.
Matthew 28:18-20
And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen. (KJV)
These last verses of the gospel of Matthew are commonly known as The Great Commission. Jesus told His followers, and us by extension, to travel, to teach about Him, about the kingdom of God, and to make disciples of all nations for Him. This is a daunting task. But then He added a comforting promise – that He would be with us! We know that He is with His people in the person of the Holy Spirit. Knowing that God is with us no matter where we go is a great comfort.
Matthew 15:21
Then Jesus went thence, and departed into the coasts of Tyre and Sidon. (KJV)
Jesus in His ministry traveled. In serving Him, we too travel, some farther than others.
Exodus 13:21
And the LORD went before them by day in a pillar of a cloud, to lead them the way; and by night in a pillar of fire, to give them light; to go by day and night: (KJV)
In the Old Testament, when God used Moses to lead His people out of the land of Egypt into the Promised Land, God went before His people to show them the way they were to go, as they went forward into the unknown. The pillar of cloud and a pillar of fire not only guided the children of Israel, but it also was a visual reminder of His presence with them.
Proverbs 15:3
The eyes of the LORD are in every place, beholding the evil and the good. (KJV)
This is a good reminder when traveling abroad to places that may hold trouble. There is evil in the world, but nothing that God does not know about.
2 Chronicles 16:9
For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to shew himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him. (KJV)
This verse reminds us that it is not where in the world we go but rather what is important is our relationship with God. When we seek to please Him, then He will protect us with His strength.
Joshua 1:8&9
This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success. Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.
This Old Testament verse was spoken by Moses before he died. Moses said these words to his successor Joshua as both a reminder and an encouragement for the great task Joshua had before him. This is also a reminder that while we expect God’s protection and His help in our travels, He expects us to read, think about, and do the commands in His Word.
Psalm 23:3&4
He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. (KJV)
Psalm 23 is a widely recited chapter of the Bible. These verses provide comfort and assurance of God’s leading whether in actual travel or needed direction in our daily lives for safe travel through life.
Proverbs 16:9
A man’s heart deviseth his way: but the LORD directeth his steps. (KJV)
Everyone needs direction in their lives. Sometimes the decisions we make will take us to faraway places. But no matter where we travel, or don’t. this verse is a reminder that God has a plan for us. We have the responsibility to seek His direction every step of the way as we travel through life.
John 14:27
Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. (KJV)
In this New Testament verse, Jesus is speaking. Although this promise is not specific to anxiety about a long trip, the peace that God offers applies to your next trip or any other troubling situation you may face.
Philippians 4:6&7
Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. (KJV)
This is a good reminder penned by the Apostle Paul. to take every little thing in prayer to God. Although He knows our thoughts and what is troubling us, He wants us to talk to Him about them. Even a short prayer to Him shows our faith in our heavenly Father.

Psalm 91:1&2
He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust. (KJV)
Despite how and when you travel, your safety and your protection are of God.
Psalm 116:8&9
For thou hast delivered my soul from death, mine eyes from tears, and my feet from falling. I will walk before the LORD in the land of the living. (KJV)
This verse is a testimony of what God did in the past. Remembering the deliverance and the blessings of God in the past gives confidence for the future.
Isaiah 52:7
How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace; that bringeth good tidings of good, that publisheth salvation; that saith unto Zion, Thy God reigneth! (KJV)
This verse is a comfort to all those who travel near and far to spread the good news of Jesus which is found in the entire Bible.
Psalm 95:4&5
In his hand are the deep places of the earth: the strength of the hills is his also. The sea is his, and he made it: and his hands formed the dry land. (KJV)
When you admire the beautiful scenery, a very dark valley like the intriguing Grand Canyon, the oceans, and all of the beauty inland, take some moments to praise the Lord Jesus Christ for His handiwork in nature.
Isaiah 54:10
For the mountains shall depart, and the hills be removed; but my kindness shall not depart from thee, neither shall the covenant of my peace be removed, saith the LORD that hath mercy on thee. (KJV)
Traveling to different locations, whether it is the holy land, the far side of the sea, another country or just away from the familiar, one of the blessings is to see and enjoy the wonders of God’s creation. The next time you admire the majesty of mountains, consider the fact the love of Christ is far more lasting.
Psalm 139:9 &10
If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me.
“The wings of the morning” or as some may explain this phrase “the wings of the dawn” means that if a person could travel as fast as light, they could not outrun the presence of God. This is a wonderful promise!
Take some or all of these travel verses with you as you plan your next trip. And always don’t forget to pray that God will grant you safe travels in all of your journeys.
