51 Top Bible Verses About Worship And Praise Of God

There are many Bible verses about worship. Human beings have a God-given desire to worship something or someone. God, the Creator, desires His entire creation, especially humans, whom He created in His image, to worship Him. Before delving into some Bible verses about worship, here is the Merriam-Webster definition of “worship”

1. Reverent honor and homage paid to God or a sacred personage, or to any object regarded as sacred.

2. Adoring reverence or regard.

There are many ways to worship God, and one of the most popular ways is through a worship service at church. The very act of going to church and taking part in the activities there, which include singing to God, listening to His Word being preached, studying God’s Word, and even giving money to God’s work, are all parts of worship.

Bible Verses About Worship ─ Spirit and Truth

The most common worship verses come from the words of Jesus Christ, which are recorded in:

John 4:20-24: “Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship. Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father. Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews. But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.” (KJV)

Jesus was talking with a Samaritan woman who thought Jesus was a Jewish prophet. She referred to Mount Gerizim, also called the “mount of blessing,” when she said, “Our fathers worshipped in this mountain.” At that place there was a temple constructed, and many Samaritans worshipped God here.

Jesus told the lady that true worshipers would not need a physical place to worship God. Rather, Jesus told her back then ─ and us today ─ that proper worship of God is “in spirit.” Spiritual worship is an allusion to the Holy Spirit, and “in truth,” which means worshiping God the way He desires. Jesus wanted her to know that this type of worship by God’s people is far more important than any place or structure used for worship.

Today, the dwelling place of God’s Holy Spirit is in the hearts of His children. To worship Christ Jesus in Spirit and in truth can, and should, be done both privately and publicly.

“Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.” Hebrews 10:25 (KJV)

This verse tells Christians to go to church. Attending church is being obedient to God and the services at church give Him praise and worship.

Ephesians 3:14 “For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ…” (KJV)

The Apostle Paul began many of his prayers, like the one above, with worship.

Bible Verses About Worship ─ Acceptable Worship

It is a good thing to desire to worship God, but God clarifies that not all worship, even of Him, is accepted by Him. When worshipping God, it is important to know and to use the proper protocol, just as it is important to know and use the proper protocol when addressing very important people on Earth. Here are some verses about acceptable worship as compared to unacceptable worship of God.

“And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.” 1 Samuel 15:22 (KJV)

In this verse, the prophet Samuel was speaking to King Saul. He basically told Saul that the true worship of God is being obedient to Him.

“Sacrifice and offering thou didst not desire; mine ears hast thou opened: burnt offering and sin offering hast thou not required.” Psalm 40:6 (KJV)

In Old Testament times, worship of God was accompanied by animal sacrifices. But in this verse, King David realized the spiritual significance of sacrifice, and that an obedient ear to hear and obey God’s Word was far more important to God than sacrifices and offerings.

“To what purpose cometh there to me incense from Sheba, and the sweet cane from a far country? your burnt offerings are not acceptable, nor your sacrifices sweet unto me.” Jeremiah 6:20 (KJV)

God, speaking through His prophet Jeremiah, told the disobedient children of Israel that their sacrifices were not acceptable worship to Him.

Mark 7:7 “Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.” (KJV)

When Jesus was on Earth, He rebuked the religious sect of the Pharisees. They had an outward show of worshipping God but made up their own religious rules. Therefore, their worship of God was “in vain,” or useless.

Bible Verses About Worship ─ Old Testament

Old Testament Israelites knew the importance of worship, as they worshipped God in different ways and on different occasions. Here are some examples of worship in the Old Testament.

“Now therefore, I pray thee, pardon my sin, and turn again with me, that I may worship the LORD.” 1 Samuel 15:25 (KJV)

Kings Saul sinned after he disobeyed a direct order from God, but he wanted the prophet Samuel to forgive him so that he could worship God.

“And Hezekiah prayed before the LORD, and said, O LORD God of Israel, which dwellest between the cherubims, thou art the God, even thou alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth; thou hast made heaven and earth.” 2 Kings 19:15 (KJV)

Godly King Hezekiah worshipped God as part of his prayer to God when he faced a great threat.

“And Ezra blessed the LORD, the great God. And all the people answered, Amen, Amen, with lifting up their hands: and they bowed their heads, and worshipped the LORD with their faces to the ground.” Nehemiah 8:6 (KJV)

Ezra led the inhabitants of Jerusalem in worship prior to teaching them the law of God.

“Now I Nebuchadnezzar praise and extol and honour the King of heaven, all whose works are truth, and his ways judgment: and those that walk in pride he is able to abase.” Daniel 4:37 (KJV)

The pagan king Nebuchadnezzar worshipped God after God had humbled him.

Bible Verses About Worship From The Psalms

King David wrote most of the psalms in the Book of Psalms. Psalms were used as songs for Old Testament Jews to sing to honor God. Here are some, but certainly not an exhaustive list, of the many verses about worship from the book of Psalms.

“To the end that my glory may sing praise to thee, and not be silent. O LORD my God, I will give thanks unto thee for ever.” Psalm 30:12 (KJV)

This verse is a praise of David when he dedicated his house. Praising and thanking God is part of worship to God.

“How excellent is thy lovingkindness, O God! therefore the children of men put their trust under the shadow of thy wings.” Psalm 36:7 (KJV)

This verse of praise from David about God reminds the reader of God’s wonderful and steadfast love.

“O come, let us sing unto the LORD: let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation. Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving, and make a joyful noise unto him with psalms. For the LORD is a great God, and a great King above all gods.” Psalm 95:1-3 (KJV)

These three verses begin a glorious song of praise to God.

“O sing unto the LORD a new song; for he hath done marvellous things: his right hand, and his holy arm, hath gotten him the victory.” Psalm 98:1 (KJV)

This verse reminds the reader that singing is part of worship, even while it commands the reader to sing songs of praise to God.

“Exalt ye the LORD our God, and worship at his footstool; for he is holy.” Psalm 99:5 (KJV)

Isaiah 66:1 says that the Earth is God’s footstool. Therefore, anyone on Earth can worship God, Who is in heaven.

“Save us, O LORD our God, and gather us from among the heathen, to give thanks unto thy holy name, and to triumph in thy praise.” Psalm 106:47 (KJV)

This verse combines a request with the promise of praise and worship from the recipients. This verse is a reminder to both thank God for His answers to our prayers, and is also a reminder that as we pray, what we desire from God would be used for His glory.

“I will worship toward thy holy temple, and praise thy name for thy lovingkindness and for thy truth: for thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name.” Psalm 138:2 (KJV)

This verse indirectly tells the reader that God is to be worshiped for the truth in His holy Word. God gave us His mind through His Word, and this is reason enough to worship Him.

Bible Verses About Worship During Difficult Times

It is easy to worship God when we feel He is blessing us and things are good in our lives. It is harder, yet still necessary, to worship Him during trials. We know God can easily remove all difficulties from our lives, yet, when He chooses not to, it is still our responsibility to worship Him. Here are some verses and examples of worshipping God during trying times.

“Although the fig tree shall not blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vines; the labour of the olive shall fail, and the fields shall yield no meat; the flock shall be cut off from the fold, and there shall be no herd in the stalls: Yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will joy in the God of my salvation.” Habakkuk 3:17-18 (KJV)

Even if the crops don’t produce and the livestock dies, resulting in a great famine, the prophet Habakkuk was determined to worship and to find joy in God because, despite circumstances, God is the God of salvation.

“And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them.” Acts 16:25 (KJV)

The great Apostle Paul and his fellow missionary, Silas, were beaten and imprisoned for preaching about Jesus Christ. Chained in the stocks, aching and in pain, unable to sleep, they worshiped God with songs of praise to Him!

“Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,” Ephesians 5:20 (KJV)

Thanking God for all things, both the good and for the difficulties that He allows us to endure, is worship. Thanking God for “all things” includes the things that compose our trials in life and our blessings.

“In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.” 1 Thessalonians 5:18 (KJV)

This verse reiterates the same concept of being thankful for all things that God allows, both good and bad. Thanking God for the trials that He allows shows that our trust is in Him, and our acceptance of His working His perfect will for our lives.

Bible Verses About Worship ─ Obedience Is Worship

One way to worship God is by being obedient to His Word. Here are some Bible verses about living our daily lives in a way that is pleasing to Christ Jesus.

“Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” Matthew 5:16 (KJV)

Our lives are a testimony of our Christian faith, so we should work to bring glory to God in all that we do.

“I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” Romans 12:1-2 (KJV)

A sacrifice has no will of its own and is to be used for the will of someone else. Paul says that God’s people are to be a living sacrifice, using their bodies not to please themselves, but to bring glory to God.

“Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.” 1 Corinthians 10:31 (KJV)

Church services and worship leaders are a part of Godly worship. But God’s people should also worship God daily, even as they live their normal lives and going about their daily activities as unto God. Striving to live a daily life that is pleasing to God is showing honor and giving homage to God and is worship. Even our mundane tasks should be done for the glory of God. Striving to bring God glory in all that we do is worshiping Him.

“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.” Colossians 3:16-17 (KJV)

Mentally and privately singing joyful songs to God is worship. Thanking God for all the wonderful things He has given and the trials He allows is also part of worship.

“By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name.” Hebrews 13:15 (KJV)

Praising God is a sacrifice. It takes something from us to do so. However, praising God is part of worship.

Bible Verses About Worship ─ The Birth Of Jesus

“Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.” Matthew 2:1-2 (KJV)

At the first advent of Jesus Christ, kings came to worship Him, even as a helpless baby.

“And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us. And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger. And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child.” Luke 2:15-17 (KJV)

After the angels announced the birth of Jesus to shepherds, the shepherds went to worship this special baby.

Bible Verses About Worship ─ Angels Worship Christ

Throughout the Bible, both in the Old and New Testaments, holy angels worship God. Here are some verses that mention the worship of holy angels.

“Praise ye the LORD. Praise ye the LORD from the heavens: praise him in the heights. Praise ye him, all his angels: praise ye him, all his hosts.” Psalm 148:1-2 (KJV)

“And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory.” Isaiah 6:3 (KJV)

“And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.” Luke 2:13-14 (KJV)

“And again, when he bringeth in the firstbegotten into the world, he saith, And let all the angels of God worship him.” Hebrews 1:6 (KJV)

“And the four beasts had each of them six wings about him; and they were full of eyes within: and they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come.” Revelation 4:8 (KJV)

Bible Verses About Worship ─ Worshiping Angels Is Forbidden

stone stature of angel with his hands over his face

God is a jealous God. He wants His people, His creation, to worship Him. His people need to worship Him, not His creation. Angels are not God, as they are a part of His creation. It is tempting to worship these great, spiritual, and magnificent beings who have access to the throne room of God. Here are some verses warning against worshipping angels.

“Let no man beguile you of your reward in a voluntary humility and worshipping of angels, intruding into those things which he hath not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind.” Colossians 2:18 (KJV)

Paul warns worshipping angels is such a sin that God would take away your rewards in heaven!

“And I fell at his feet to worship him. And he said unto me, See thou do it not: I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus: worship God: for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.” Revelation 19:10 (KJV)

When the Apostle John saw the vision that an angel had given him, and which he recorded in the Book of Revelation, he was so overwhelmed and amazed that he wanted to worship the angel, the messenger. But the angel, instead of accepting worship, turned John’s attention, and his worship, to God.

“And I John saw these things, and heard them. And when I had heard and seen, I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel which shewed me these things. Then saith he unto me, See thou do it not: for I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren the prophets, and of them which keep the sayings of this book: worship God.” Revelation 22:8-9 (KJV)

John repeated his spontaneous actions, including both the rebuke and command of the angel at the end of the Book of Revelation.
