Bible Verses About Creation — The First Day
The most concentrated group of Bible verses about creation occurs in the first two chapters of God’s Word in the Book of Genesis. There, during the first week of time, God was busy creating the world. The Bible begins with the story of creation.
If the truth of Creator God is rejected, nothing else about the Bible can be believed. It is vital for any reader of the Word of God to believe the facts of creation in the way that God presented them in His Word. Believing the account of creation sets the mental stage for believing and accepting the rest of the Bible.
To the thinking mind, the present world must have had a beginning. All of the Bible verses about creation, including how God formed man of the dust of the ground, answers the huge, philosophical question of “How did we get here?” and “Why are we here?” At the same time, these Bible verses give glory, honor, and praise to God, who, in His love, created and sustains all of His creation. The Bible verses about creation also reveals the nature of the Creator and man’s dependence upon Him.
Genesis 1:1
“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.” (KJV)
The very first verse of the Bible says that God created the time-space-matter continuum.
God created the concept of time. The time at which He created the concept of “time” is mentioned here when the Bible says, “In the beginning.” Space, the area to put things, is referred to by the word “heaven.” And finally, the word “earth” communicates information about matter, the “stuff” of life. Matter must exist in a specific time, and also in a particular space. God’s Word begins with this introduction and reveals that God Himself first prepared the time-space-matter continuum. Then He began to fill time and space with matter.
The second verse of Genesis gives more information about the creation of the early Earth.
Genesis 1:2
“And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.” (KJV)
During the first day of the creation week, God also created light and darkness. He separated them and He gave them the names of “Day” and “Night,” respectively.
Genesis 1:5
“And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.” (KJV)
Bible Verses About Creation — The Second Day
On the second day of creation, God progressed further as He shaped the Earth and the water, separating them from each other. On this day He made the firmament, the atmospheric expanse that we commonly call the “sky” or “the heavens.” Both above and below the firmament He placed water.
Genesis 1:7-8
“And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so. And God called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day.” (KJV)
Bible Verses About Creation — The Third Day
On the third day of creation, God concentrated on the Earth. On this day, He did some horizontal separating and focused His creative efforts upon its surface. Here, God divided the water from the dry ground, and once this was finished, He created plant life. Every fruit tree and every plant we see today has its origins from the original fruit trees that God made on the third day of the creation week. God created mature, seed-bearing plants able to immediately reproduce themselves.
Genesis 1:12-13
“And the earth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after his kind: and God saw that it was good. And the evening and the morning were the third day.” (KJV)
Bible Verses About Creation — The Fourth Day
On the fourth day of creation, God shifted His focus to the sky, called “the firmament.” He then created the great lights of the sun, moon, and other heavenly bodies throughout the universe, including the starry host.
Genesis 1:14 -19
“And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years:
And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so. And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also.
And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth, And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good.
And the evening and the morning were the fourth day.” (KJV)
Bible Verses About Creation — The Fifth Day
With plant life established, and the sun and the moon to give light, on the fifth day of creation God began creating animal life. He created marine animals and birds on this day. Like plants, every species of fish and every bird had its origin on this day.
Genesis 1:20-23
“And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life, and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven. And God created great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good. And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let fowl multiply in the earth. And the evening and the morning were the fifth day.” (KJV)
Bible Verses About Creation — The Sixth Day
During the creation week, God moved from the simple to the complex. On the sixth day of creation, God created land animals and finally, the first human — Adam. But God was not finished yet. His final creation was the first female. God put Adam into a deep sleep, and, according to Scriptures, took one of the ribs He had given to Adam, and from that rib He formed Eve.
Here is the Bible verse about the creation of Man:
Genesis 1:26-27
“And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.” (KJV)
The reference about God saying that He was to make man “in our image” refers, among other things, to the divine nature of man. This divine nature, the making of man after the image of God, is what makes humans different from the animal kingdom.
Genesis 1:31
“And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.” (KJV)
God finished His creative work on the sixth day. He had made His work to be self-sustaining, but He did not ignore nor neglect that which He had initially created.
Bible Verses About Creation — The Seventh Day
On the seventh day of the creation week, God rested. This seventh day was the first sabbath day. God did not need to rest, but He did so partly to set the example for the humans that He created to give them a day of rest. And on this day of God’s rest, He must have enjoyed looking over the work he spoke into existence and that of His hands, His creation.
Genesis 2:1-2
“Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.” (KJV)
These days of the creation week were literal 24-hour days.
Exodus 20:11
“For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day:” (KJV)
Bible Verses About Creation — The Creator
The Creator is named in Genesis as “God,” referring to God the Father. The Hebrew name of God used in the first chapter of Genesis is “Elohim” meaning, “the Strong One,” or “The Putter Forth of Power.” It is also plural in Hebrew. In Hebrew, a plural word has the connation of not two, but three involved in an action! This connotation hints at the triune Godhead working together to create. Later verses in the Bible support this. All three Persons of the Triune Godhead were present during creation. In Genesis 1:2, the Spirit of God is mentioned as He moved in creation. In the New Testament, Jesus Christ is named as the Creator.
John 1:1-3
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.” (KJV)
Jesus Christ is called The Word of God. He was both present and active in the original creation process.
Colossians 1:16-17
“For by him [Jesus Christ] were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.” (KJV)
This verse also shows that after the initial creation was finished, God is still active in the life that He began so long ago with the phrase, “by him all things consist.”
God still cares for His creation. In the Old Testament, Job knew God’s careful involvement in every aspect of His creation.
Job 12:10
“In whose hand is the soul of every living thing, and the breath of all mankind.” (KJV)
God did not start His creation and leave it to its own devices. Jesus also said about His creation:
Matthew 10:29-30
“Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered.” (KJV)
Bible Verses About Creation — From the Psalms
Most of the Book of Psalms were written by King David. Psalms is a collection of prayers and praise to God. Several times in these songs of praise, the psalmist references God’s creation and His powerful and loving creative work.
Psalm 8:3-4
“When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained; What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?”
Attempting to understand the complexity of the natural world and realizing God and His power behind the awe-inspiring elements of nature is part of praise to God. The God Who created all of the world and the wonderful things in it is also a personal, loving God Who desires praise from His creation.
Psalm 19:1-3
<<To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David.>> “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork. Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge. There is no speech nor language, where their voice is not heard.” (KJV)
David understood God’s creative work and how the creation spoke silently, at least to our human ears, but accurately, showing the invisible attributes of its Creator.
Psalm 24:1-2
<<A Psalm of David.>> “The earth is the LORD’S, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein. For he hath founded it upon the seas, and established it upon the floods.” (KJV)
Praising God for His excellent creative work is a common theme in the Book of Psalms. A God Who can bring shape and place all of the elements of the natural world is a God to be feared, loved, praised, and worshipped.
Psalm 33:6
“By the word of the LORD were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth.” (KJV)
Many times in Scripture, the method of creation is mentioned. That is, by His verbal spoken word He created all things.
This is repeated in this verse as well.
Psalm 33:9
“For he spake, and it was done; he commanded, and it stood fast.” (KJV)
It has been said that the meaning of the word “universe” is one (“uni- “) spoken sentence (“-verse”). Whether or not this is the true etymology of the word “universe,” it is interesting that the allusion of the spoken word is connected to the word “universe.”
Psalm 102:25
“Of old hast thou laid the foundation of the earth: and the heavens are the work of thy hands.” (KJV)
This verse about creation references the “hands on” work of God as He shaped the Earth and heaven. A God so large as to be outside of His vast creation is truly an amazing God.
The entire chapter of Psalm 104 is a psalm of praise to God about His marvelous creation. The psalmist encourages others to praise God because of His wonderful creative work.
Psalm 104:1
“Bless the LORD, O my soul. O LORD my God, thou art very great; thou art clothed with honour and majesty.” (KJV)
The writer of Psalm chapter 148 calls upon nature itself to praise its Creator. Again, the method of creating, that of God powerfully speaking everything into existence, and His command to the elements to form into their respective entities, is repeated here.
Psalm 148:1-5
“Praise ye the LORD. Praise ye the LORD from the heavens: praise him in the heights. Praise ye him, all his angels: praise ye him, all his hosts. Praise ye him, sun and moon: praise him, all ye stars of light. Praise him, ye heavens of heavens, and ye waters that be above the heavens. Let them praise the name of the LORD: for he commanded, and they were created.” (KJV)
The vastness of the stars of heaven, the intricacies of the great, heavenly bodies, the details of the smallest insects, the marvels of the inward parts of the human body, the volumes of research from scientists of all disciplines, all point to the Creator God. And though unable to be heard by the human ears, it seems that all of creation itself gives praise to God.
Bible Verses About Creation — Old Testament
Throughout the Bible, the days of the original creation and God’s creative work are referenced. Here are some more verses from the Old Testament which refers to God’s creation.
In the book of Job, one of Job’s acquaintances, Elihu, realized and told Job that it is God Who gives man the many invisible attributes of wisdom, making humans more intelligent than the wild animals or birds of the heavens.
Job 35:11
“Who teacheth us more than the beasts of the earth, and maketh us wiser than the fowls of heaven?” (KJV)
In the Book of Job, God Himself addressed Job. One of the questions God asked Job was:
Job 38:36
“Who hath put wisdom in the inward parts? or who hath given understanding to the heart?” (KJV)
The answer is obviously — God Himself.
The prophet Isaiah alluded to the powerful act of God’s creation.
Isaiah 40:28
“Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding.” (KJV)
The prophet Jeremiah, in praise to God, and with the knowledge of God’s power in his life, referenced the creation of old.
Jeremiah 32:17
“Ah Lord GOD! behold, thou hast made the heaven and the earth by thy great power and stretched out arm, and there is nothing too hard for thee:” (KJV)
Bible Verses About Creation — New Testament
Jesus, in His teaching, referenced God’s ongoing attention to His creation, even to the smallest details of plant life.
Luke 12:28
“If then God so clothe the grass, which is to day in the field, and to morrow is cast into the oven; how much more will he clothe you, O ye of little faith?” (KJV)
The Apostle Paul, in writing to the Christians at Rome, referred to the natural world as a silent, but powerful, testimony of its Creator.
Romans 1:20
“For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:” (KJV)
Hebrews 11:3
“Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.” (KJV)
The writer of Hebrews states that it takes faith in God to believe the creation account in God’s Word. All things that we see have a beginning. God made His creation to reproduce so that it would continue.
The angels will proclaim God’s glory and will command those on the earth to worship the Creator God.
Revelation 4:11
“Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.” (KJV)
God created all things for His pleasure. Like an expert craftsman who takes delight in the work of his hands, so, too, does God delight in His craftmanship.
Revelation 14:7
“Saying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his judgment is come: and worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters.” (KJV)
The Maker of all things has the right to bring judgment on His creation, especially when and if it spirals out of control. A word to the wise is to fear Him and worship Him. As created beings, it is in our best interest to worship our Maker.
Bible Verses About Creation — The New Heaven and the New Earth
After God finished His creative work, He rested — for a time. When this world ends, and He said it will, He will create a new heavens and a new earth. This future act of creation is referred to in both the Old and the New Testaments. The prophet Isaiah first introduced this:
Isaiah 65:17
“For, behold, I create new heavens and a new earth: and the former shall not be remembered, nor come into mind.” (KJV)
Isaiah 66:22
“For as the new heavens and the new earth, which I will make, shall remain before me, saith the LORD, so shall your seed and your name remain.” (KJV)
God promises to create this new earth as a dwelling place for His people.
The Apostle Peter was looking forward to this new and righteous place, knowing that, just as God created the original earth and heaven, He will also create a new heaven and new earth.
Both in the natural world and in the original creation, as God continued His creative work, it became increasingly more complex. Since God created the Earth, and the vastness of the entire universe, complete with all of its beauty and mystery, His next creation, the new heaven and new earth, must be even bigger, and far better, than the natural world that now exists.
But God’s people will inhabit this new area. It may be that this present Earth, as beautiful as it is, which God created in a mere six days, is a type of “practice.” The next, the new heavens and Earth, will be even greater. With this in mind, truly, the trite saying, “The best is yet to come,” will be a glorious reality, incomprehensible to our present, human understanding. But with the eyes of faith we can look forward to this new world.
This new world must be created because of sin, God cursed His original Earth; the creatures that God made soiled His creation.
Genesis 3:17
“And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life” (KJV)
The sinful action of God’s humans must have disappointed Him terribly, although it did not take Him by surprise. Yet, even when Adam sinned, God knew that He would, in the far future, work again to create a new Earth. In this new place, God decreed that only righteousness would dwell there.
2 Peter 3:13
“Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.” (KJV)
The Apostle John had a vision of this new Earth.
Revelation 21:1
“And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.” (KJV)
God does not give out many details of this new creation. We must accept the fact that is it coming, and it will be wonderful. But one subtle hint about the future, which is contained in a promise, does promote excitement.
1 Corinthians 2:9
“But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.” (KJV)
All of the Bible verses about creation strengthens our faith in God and His Word. These Bible verses, which focus on the natural world, help us to share the goodness of God with those who don’t know Him.
