Looking for a good husband Bible verse? There are many. A good husband is not born, he is made. There are many Scripture references about marriage since God designed this institution, and He gave instructions to men about how to be a good husband.
The Bible also provides many examples of a good husband. As a man submits to God, and obeys God’s Word, he becomes a good husband. Here are some verses, all from the King James Version of the Bible about being a good husband.
A Good Husband Bible Verse – Old Testament
Genesis 2:18
And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him. (KJV)
The context of this verse is in the Garden of Eden. Adam had seen and named all of the animals. But out of all of the animal kingdom, there was nothing that resembled him.
There was no other human. He was alone. God saw this and wanted to give Adam a counterpart for him – a woman. She was to be a helper fit for him. She would be “meet” suitable, similar, but different from Adam and who would complement him.
She would be an equal partner.
Men today still want a wife, a woman who is suitable to be their companion. They also want their wife to be their friend.
Genesis 2:21
And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof (KJV)
Adam sacrificed his own flesh for the promise of a wife. He was not disappointed!
Genesis 2:24
Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh. (KJV)
After a man finds his perfect woman, God instructs him to leave his home that he shared with his parents, and together with his wife, create a new family unit.
This verse is repeated in the New Testament: Ephesians 5:31 – For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh. (KJV)
Genesis 3:6
And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat. (KJV)
At first glance, this does not look like a good husband Bible verse. But what makes this fit the category of a good husband Bible verse is that Adam knew exactly what he was doing when Eve offered him the forbidden fruit.
She ate and Adam loved her so much that he wanted to share her consequence. This is proven in the New Testament Bible verse: 1 Timothy 2:14: “And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression.” (KJV).
Genesis 26:8
And it came to pass, when he had been there a long time, that Abimelech king of the Philistines looked out at a window, and saw, and, behold, Isaac was sporting with Rebekah his wife. (KJV)
Whatever exactly the verb “sporting” meant, Isaac was enjoying being with his wife.
Deuteronomy 24:5
When a man hath taken a new wife, he shall not go out to war, neither shall he be charged with any business: but he shall be free at home one year, and shall cheer up his wife which he hath taken. (KJV)
God in His law to Moses, instructed that when a couple got married, the honeymoon was to last for an entire year!
Judges 4:4
And Deborah, a prophetess, the wife of Lapidoth, she judged Israel at that time. (KJV)
Lapidoth allowed his wife to serve her nation as a judge. A good husband supports his wife as she utilizes her God-given gifts.
Ruth 4:10
Moreover Ruth the Moabitess, the wife of Mahlon, have I purchased to be my wife, to raise up the name of the dead upon his inheritance, that the name of the dead be not cut off from among his brethren, and from the gate of his place: ye are witnesses this day.(KJV)
Boaz is speaking in this verse. He married the widow Ruth and knew that their son would have the name of Ruth’s late husband. A good husband is not self-centered.
1 Samuel 1:8
Then said Elkanah her husband to her, Hannah, why weepest thou? and why eatest thou not? and why is thy heart grieved? am not I better to thee than ten sons? (KJV)
Elkanah loved Hannah despite the fact that she could not bear him any children. Elkanah tried to fill her void with his love for her.
1 Samuel 1:23
And Elkanah her husband said unto her, Do what seemeth thee good; tarry until thou have weaned him; only the LORD establish his word. So the woman abode, and gave her son suck until she weaned him.(KJV)
When God did bless Elkanah and Hannah with their first child – a son- as a result of Hannah vowing that she would lend her baby to the LORD if God would give her a son, Elkanah supported her decision. A Good husband serves God along with his wife.
Proverbs 18:22
Whoso findeth a wife findeth a good thing, and obtaineth favour of the LORD. (KJV)
God Himself rejoices when a man finds the woman he wants to marry. God’s wedding present to couples is His favor.
Proverbs 19:14
House and riches are the inheritance of fathers: and a prudent wife is from the LORD. (KJV)
God Himself blesses a Godly man with a wife of good behavior.
Proverbs 31:10
Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies. (KJV)
A man wants a woman who is virtuous. God says the value of an excellent wife is far greater than precious stones. Unlike beautiful and valuable gems, a woman can and does express her love for her husband.
A good husband brings out the best in his wife, similar to a jeweler polishing a gemstone.
Ecclesiastes 9:9
Live joyfully with the wife whom thou lovest all the days of the life of thy vanity (KJV)
Solomon in this verse instructs husband to be joyful with their own wives all of their life.
Song of Solomon 2:4
He brought me to the banqueting house, and his banner over me was love.(KJV)
The wife in the book of Song of Solomon describes her good man in this beautiful verse.
Malachi 2:14-16
Yet ye say, Wherefore? Because the LORD hath been witness between thee and the wife of thy youth, against whom thou hast dealt treacherously: yet is she thy companion, and the wife of thy covenant.
This verse is in the context of divorce. When a couple gets married, God is a witness of their martial vows, their covenant of marriage is to each other and also to God. God tells the husband that if he wants to divorce his wife which is his companion, he is dealing treacherously against her.
Hosea 2:7
And she shall follow after her lovers, but she shall not overtake them; and she shall seek them, but shall not find them: then shall she say, I will go and return to my first husband; for then was it better with me than now. (KJV)
The prophet Hosea was instructed by God to marry a prostitute to illustrate God’s love toward the nation of Israel. He married Gomer who was unfaithful to him. Despite the fact that she had sexual relations with other men, she eventually returned back to her own husband.
A Good Husband Bible Verse – New Testament
While the Old Testament has many examples of the way husbands should treat their wives, there is much admonition of the Lord about marriage specifics in the New Testament as well.
Matthew 5:28
But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.
Jesus said that men who were looking at and lusting for other women were actually committing adultery. A good husband disciplines both his body and his thoughts to be focused on his wife alone.
1 Corinthians 7:3&4
Let the husband render unto the wife due benevolence: and likewise also the wife unto the husband. The wife hath not power of her own body, but the husband: and likewise also the husband hath not power of his own body, but the wife. (KJV)
This verse implies each partner’s responsibility in the context of sexual marital duty.
1 Corinthians 7:11
But and if she depart, let her remain unmarried, or be reconciled to her husband: and let not the husband put away his wife. (KJV)
God says that a divorced woman has two choices about marriage: either reconcile with her husband or don’t remarry. Also God tells husbands not to divorce their wives.
This admonition against divorce reflects the kingdom of God. God does not put away His bride, the body of believers.
1 Corinthians 7:22
But he that is married careth for the things that are of the world, how he may please his wife. (KJV)
This is a good husband Bible verse telling that a husband desires to please his wife with material things.
1 Corinthians 11:3
But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God. (KJV)
There is an order with human relationships. This order is not only true in the physical realm but this oreder is also reflected in the divine Godhead as well.
2 Corinthians 6:14
Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? (KJV)
A future husband wants to find a woman who shares his faith. Otherwise he would be unequally yoked with her.
Marriage involves fellowship and communion with each other. When two people don’t share a common faith, their yoke of marriage makes their relationship difficult.
Ephesians 4:2
Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath (KJV)
Husbands and wives do not always agree on everything. God gives rules about how to have an argument.
It is okay to be angry, it is not okay to have that anger turn to sin. Also He commands His people, including married couples, to resolve all disagreements before going to bed.
Ephesians 5:23
For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body. (KJV)
A Godly husband is the head of his home and this marital relationship is a picture of Christ Jesus and believers.
Ephesians 5:25
Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; (KJV)
Again God tells husband to love their wives. Here God hints at the definition of love and that is the aspect of “giving” to her.
Ephesians 5:28
So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself. (KJV)
Just as a person takes care of themselves, they eat, drink, sleep and play as part of self-care. These activities also need to be directed toward and part of a husband’s care of his wife. When a husband invests his caring love into his wife, he is loving himself.
1 Thessalonians 5:21
Prove all things; hold fast that which is good. (KJV)
This is a good Bible verse with an application concerning dating. God wants a man to “prove” that is to test and to make sure that the woman he is interested in will make a good wife. When he finds such a woman, he is to hold fast to her and have a wedding ceremony!
1 Timothy 5:8
But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel. (KJV)
It is the responsibility of a godly husband to provide for his family. While a wife may help him to earn money, and she may even earn more than he does, (the virtuous woman described in Proverbs 31 is also a businesswoman).
God gave the primary responsibility of providing to the husband.
Colossians 3:18
Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as it is fit in the Lord. (KJV)
It is God’s plan that a woman submits in loving obedience to her husband as long as the husband does not expect her to do something sinful.
Colossians 3:19
Husbands, love your wives, and be not bitter against them. (KJV)
God specifically tells husbands to love their wives. Love is giving, love is meeting his wife’s needs. Love is an action more than a feeling.
1 Peter 3:17
Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered.(KJV)
God wants men to understand their wives. Woman can be complex creatures, but God instructs men to honor them even as God expects women to submit to their husbands. God calls women “the weaker vessel”.
This is not to demean her but to objectively declare the fact that women are the weaker partner, since they are in many ways women are weaker than men.
God also warns that if a man does not honor his wife, his prayers to God will be hindered. God cares about the fairer gender! While this article focused on a good husband Bible verse, check out Bible verses about good wives.
